Identification tools

Following the decision about what to identify, schools will need to select identification tools to use. To identify GATE students, schools should use a range of tools including standardised assessment data and employ a multiple methods approach.

Examples of common identification tools are grouped below under formal and informal tools.

The tools do not present a definitive list of approaches that schools could take to identifying their gifted and talented students. However, they do comprise the most commonly used approaches in New Zealand currently.

As noted in the  principles, no single method will provide the information necessary for effective identification and schools are advised to select a range of approaches for this task.
